Risk Management Knowledge Exchange
April 20, 2023
8:30 am - 3:30 pm
HSC is organizing a learning event for Risk Mangers from large providers in its insurance program – those with more than $100M in property values, known in the program as Stream B providers.
This full-day event will feature expert speakers who will examine emerging risks such as climate change, cyber threats, financial risks, and practical approaches for dealing with these them. The afternoon will focus on an information exchange between Stream B providers on risk issues and approaches to mitigating them.
Working Agenda:
8:30 – 9:00 a.m. | Refreshments & Registration |
9:00 – 9:10 a.m. | Welcome & Introductions |
9:10 – 9:30 a.m. | HSC Program & Risk Trends Analysis
To start things off, we will briefly examine claims trends among large providers in our program and how they stack up against the multi-residential sector as a whole. |
9:30 – 10:30 a.m. | Managing Risk in a World of Increasing Natural Catastrophes
Wildfires in the North. Flooding in the south-west. Windstorms and heavy rains sweeping through southern and eastern Ontario. We are seeing weather-related claims steadily increase. Last year’s Derecho alone resulted in $1B in damage across Ontario and Quebec and hit multi-site providers in our program especially hard both in terms of self-funded repairs and insurance. This session will look at evolving trends and provide concrete take-aways on how housing providers can be better prepared to manage risks associated with the new reality. |
10:30 – 10:45 a.m. | Break |
10:45 – 11:45 a.m. | Building and Maintaining Cyber Resilience
In the first half of 2021, global ransomware attacks increased by 151% over the previous year. In Canada, the average cost of a data breach is currently estimated to be $6.35M and growing. This is a serious concern for large providers with technology having become the norm for managing repairs, capital planning, handling waiting lists, HR and interacting with vendors and more. This session will focus on key risk issues and controls that are critical for housing providers to embed in their organization to effectively manage their risks and maintain insurability. |
11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. | Lunch |
12:45 – 1:30 p.m. | Fostering Organizational Resilience
Few businesses were prepared to handle the cascading impacts of COVID-19 when it emerged. Its far-reaching effects also called into question how prepared we are to handle disruptive events in today’s volatile world – and to prompt many organizations to start building strategic resilience into their operations to respond to unforeseen disruptions more quickly and efficiently. This discussion will focus on the elements of a strong resilience program and how it can be applied in a housing environment. |
1:30 – 2:45 p.m. | Roundtable & Discussion
Participants will be encouraged to reflect on topics from the morning session and provide organizational/area updates, including challenges and best practices. The discussion will include future topics for deeper dive and resource sharing. |
2:45 – 3:00 p.m. | Break |
3:00-3:30 p.m. | Wrap Up and Next Steps
Participants will discuss the creation of Stream B provider resource group for sharing with peers on ongoing basis. |
